The Difference Between Dreaming and Doing

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

I will be the first to admit I have struggled with the concept of dreaming and doing. I am quite a dreamer, I always find myself wondering and imagining these magnificent dreams and opportunities. Then reality sets in and I don't act on my dreams. It may be a realistic mindset that these things cannot come true or it's just 'too big' of a dream for manifesting. One thing I admire about young children is their ability to dream without limits. What I needed to learn was to dream like a child again and how to put action behind my dreams to turn them from a thought to reality.

I should do this, I should eat that, I should think this way. We all stumble upon some wonderful thoughts that end up only becoming a should or could. When we keep these mere thoughts in our head, no effort is being made to foster them into existence. If this 'should mentality' remains, we will never reach our goals. When our should do develops into am doing, that is when results meet reality. What's stopping us from doing what we dream of? I dare you to put action behind your dreams and see what happens.

“There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.” – Douglas H. Everett

What separates us from the person that says they want to be a successful business person compared to the person who actually is the successful business person? Action.

If we truly pursue our passion with everything we have, we will succeed and we will see differences. Maybe we don't know exactly what our passions are...but we all have dreams. Those dreams don't just come from nowhere. Listen to what sets your soul on fire. We all get excited over certain things in our lives. Dig deep and find those, knowing that action will put those into motion. Every day we have a choice to make a change, to be the change and to make our dreams a reality. Let's find our passions so we can make our dreams reality.

"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps." Proverbs 16:9

The beautiful thing about setting goals and taking action is not always reaching the end goal, it's seeing who we become in the process. While working every day to follow our dreams we may end up somewhere we never expected and it may be just where we were always meant to be, something better than we could have ever imagined.

If we continue a pattern of languor, lack of motivation, negativity or whatever it may be, we will never grow into the person we were made to be. Let's challenge ourselves to take chances and pursue endeavors that spark passion within us.

I never imagined one day I would have the opportunity to grace the Miss USA stage, but guess what this long time basketball playing, athlete will be doing in a few months? Representing the state of Wisconsin at MISS USA!!! Wow, now that is exciting. I would never have had this life changing experience if it wasn't for continually challenging myself, and for that I am overwhelmingly grateful.

I believe the road to success, whatever that may look like for you, comes from commitment and discipline. Every day we are allotted the same amount of time...what will we choose to do with our 24 hours? Will we take action to better ourselves, better others, set us apart, or will we continue to ponder the possibilities?

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” - Tony Robbins

It is necessary to develop ourselves every day, to cultivate our true identity. We are ever changing. "I cant" will only cause setbacks. We are the ones who limit ourselves. It's about taking our perceived weaknesses or limitations and eliminating them. No one is perfect, but what we can certainly look to our perfect creator for an example, knowing He sees our weakest attributes; but chooses to embrace these. If we condition our minds to build ourselves up, we can have the confidence in our abilities to help put our dreams into action. These can be small steps every day. Dreams without actions however, are nothing. That is why, no matter how small...do something toward your goals, dreams, aspirations and passions. I guarantee if we just try, there won't be disappointment.

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis

How are we going to put these dreams into action?

Knowing our passions can lead us to finding our purpose, so let's dig deep and find out what we are truly passionate about.

Never take negativity from anyone. Keep a positive mindset and not let negative thoughts stir in our minds. Be surrounded by supporters and encourages.

Consciously do one thing every day that can lead us closer to our dreams. Embrace uniqueness and individuality knowing that it's what makes us who we truly are and constantly look to improve our inner beings.

Learn from mistakes or hardships and not let these obstacles define who we are.

Not being afraid to put ourselves out there. Be kind and make connections with people. Everyone we meet has a special journey he or she has gone through and we never know if we could help that person or that person could help us.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” – Harriet Tubman
